Theme and Objective
Inspired by real-world efforts such as the SETI Institute and the ongoing search for exoplanets, SETI invites players to simulate the delicate balance between cooperation and competition that defines modern science. The objective is to earn the most prestige by discovering alien signals, publishing groundbreaking research, and making contact. However, players must also work together to fund and maintain the global SETI network—if it collapses, all players lose, and humanity misses its opportunity for first contact.

Gameplay Mechanics
The game is played over a series of rounds, each representing one year of scientific progress. On a player’s turn, they can take actions such as:

• Allocate Research Teams to different observatories or build new radio telescopes.

• Scan Star Systems to identify promising signal sources.

• Develop Technology, like advanced AI or faster data processors, to increase detection range or reduce noise interference.

• Collaborate or Compete with other players by trading data, co-authoring papers, or sabotaging efforts through political maneuvering.

• Respond to Events, which include solar flares, government funding shifts, or mysterious phenomena that alter the research landscape.

Each decision shapes the global research infrastructure and a player’s individual progress. Strategic choices are influenced by hidden objectives and public mission cards that encourage exploration of specific sectors or the discovery of life-bearing exoplanets.

Discovery and Signal System
At the heart of SETI lies a dynamic signal detection system. The game board features a star map with hundreds of possible signal sources. Each location is randomly seeded at the start of the game with a combination of noise, false positives, and genuine signals. Players must analyze data from scanned sectors, using logic and deduction to filter out cosmic noise. Only when a pattern emerges can a player attempt to confirm the signal. Once confirmed, players must decide whether to share their findings for global prestige or keep them classified for a potential solo win.

Victory Conditions
The game ends when one of three conditions is met:

1. A player successfully makes contact with extraterrestrial intelligence, triggering the final round.

2. The SETI network collapses due to lack of funding or global cooperation, resulting in collective failure.

3. The game reaches the final year (typically 15 rounds), and the winner is determined by accumulated prestige points.

Prestige is earned through published papers, discoveries, infrastructure development, and cooperation. Secret bonus objectives provide additional scoring at the end of the game.
